Scottsboro: A Tragedy of the American South
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (March, 1972)
Author: Dan T. Carter
Average review score:

Bancroft Prize Winner Delivers!
Does "Scottsboro: A Tragedy of the American South" need any more 5-star reviews to convince readers that it may just be the best historical account of an American tragedy ever written? More than seventy years have passed since nine blacks were wrongfully accused of raping two white women on board an Alabama freight train and the event still rings in the ears as if it happened yesterday. Professor Dan T. Carter has remained the preeminent expert on the Scottsboro case for more than thirty years and his extensive research is evident in this book. Never dry or dull, Professor Carter guides the reader through a harrowing story that must be read to be believed. If you're not familiar with the Scottsboro case and its important role in American and more essentially pre-Civil Rights history, this should be the first book on your list. I also recommend James Goodman's superbly written "Stories of Scottsboro" and Quentin Reynolds' "Courtroom," the biography of Scottsboro defense attorney Samuel S. Leibowitz.

Detailed, Engaging, Amazing
I love reading history books, especially when they read like a novel. Carter has produced a detailed account of this nearly forgotten episode in American History and he has done it with so much energy that one can not help but be swept up in his telling of the story. He traces the episode from its hobo origins. A freight train that carried two women and several black young men was stopped. The women, when taken from the train accused all the black men of rape and from here the stories of these rail riders takes off. Working with facinating material, the segregation of the deep South, the idea of a woman's honor, the Communist and NAACP rivalry over the case, the Jewish NYer who comes to represent the boys, the racist judges and the status quo governor and the one judge who martyrs his carreer to stand up for what he believes is right,Carter shows that the tale of Scottsboro is stranger than fiction. Not only is the story itself excellent, but Carter also brings the story up to date. For anyone interested in this time period, this is a must read!

Meticulous, Ruthless in Seach of Truth, Searing, and Scary.
Dan Carter has done a superb job in this study of the miscarriage of justice that took place in the Alabama of the 1930's. His picture is so complete and enlightening and he has attacked all the issues from all sides. If you want to get a very different picture of the atrocities capable in the U.S. of the 20th Century, read this book. I could say so much more.....

Windows NT® Server 4.0 MCSE Study System
Published in Hardcover by John Wiley & Sons (September, 1999)
Author: Alan R. Carter
Average review score:

Excellent Study Guide
Passed NT Server with score of 899--first certification class I have taken. This book is not only an excellent study guide but a great introduction to NT Server. I have been maintaining Server for over a year and learned things I needed to know 12 months ago! I hope Alan Carter keeps writing technical guides.

Worth Every Penny!
Passed easily in conjunction with Transcenders. Excellent reference guide - perfectly explains core issues regarding NT Server 4.0 and the exam.

Studying does not get much easier than this!

Highly Recommeded!

Passed the test with 900
I used this book, combined with Transcenders and my real-world experience with WinNT Server 4.0 and passed with a 900. Even with the new MCSE W2K Track (which I am pursuing) I feel the right way to do is to do the upgrade path especially if you have experience with NT 4.0. Good luck to all.

Brother to a Dragonfly
Published in Paperback by Continuum (August, 2000)
Authors: Will D. Campbell and Jimmy Carter
Average review score:

The finest coming of age story I have encountered
Brother to a dragonfly, Will D Campbell's brilliant, evocative, nostalgic luminous memoir teels the story of his family in the pre-tva rural south. Though much much more then a simple coming of age story,it is the story of 2 brothers, their lives amid the greatest change in this ountry since the civil war. Will D Campbell and his brother Joe stories are told so movingly, and with such deep power that ,by the end it will move you to tears. It is the sory of a man, family,RELIGION,the south, race, addiction, love and death. It will shatter any preconcieved notions and stereotypes, for Will D Campell is a true iconoclast. I run out of superlatives to describe this book. Read it.

one of my top 10
This is a truly wonderful autobiography. Anyone who has a brother (especially Southerners) should read this chronicle of growing up in Mississippi. I loved it so much I shared it with my Northern friends, and they loved it too. If you aren't moved by this work, check your pulse.

The most profound book I have read. A courageous work.
No other book that I have read has demonstrated the courage that Campbell took to look at personal family heartache, popular social cause, and politically unpopular issues. Campbell's message tells the reader his struggles, but does not tell the reader what to think. He has had the courage to bare his thoughts.

The Pritzker Architecture Prize: The First Twenty Years
Published in Hardcover by Harry N Abrams (May, 1999)
Authors: Martha Thorne, Colin Amery, J. Carter Brown, William J. R. Curtis, Bill N. Lacy, and Art Institute of Chicago
Average review score:

You be the judge.
This book was preety much like i expected, a display of the greatest architectural works for the last 20 years of the 20th century. As a Rogers, Piano, Gehry and Calatrava admirer the works of other architects that you wer'nt aware of their existance certainly open your eyes, some possibly inspiring, as i know they were for me.

For those people not practicing or learning architecture but admire the beauty, a display of SOME of the worlds most fabulous buildings open your eyes to look beyond the street you live in.

Although this is a fantastic book there are many other fabulous buildings left out, which you would expect. There arn't a lot of images of each building, but how thick can a book be? if you love the guggenheim in bilboa, 5 images certainly arnt going to show you the whole story, as is the same with the getty, or the creativity of calatrava BUY THEIR BOOKS there is so much more to an architect than just one building. How they can award a single prize to someone out of so many masters must be the hardest job in the world.

A must for anyone who enjoys architecture
As a student of architecture who hopes to one day win the Pritzker, this book in invaluable to me. The variety of architecture in this book gives the reader great insight into many different kinds of architecture. It's great even to just flip through the pages and look at the pictures... Of course, the written content is also very insightful and enjoyable to read. This book inspires you to learn more about the 20 architects featured in the book, as well as the future winners of Pritzker Award.

I love this book!
I first saw this book at The Getty Museum. My boyfriend, an architect, picked it out as a great architecture book. The pictures are absolutely beautiful. The architecture represented in the book are some of the most famous in the world and a wonder to look at. From the famous Guggenheim in Bilbao to Falling Water, it's my best buy. It's worth more than the money that you'll pay at Amazon!

Sweet Grapes: How to Stop Being Infertile and Start Living Again
Published in Paperback by Perspectives Press (March, 1998)
Authors: Jean W. Carter and Michael Carter
Average review score:

An excellent book on childlessness and infertility
This book is surprisingly helpful, supportive, optimistic and is written for both men and women. I am a 40-year-old woman who doesn't have children because of illness. This book is applicable to unwanted childlessness from all causes--not just infertility. An alternate title could be "Sweet Grapes: How to Stop Feeling Miserable About Not Having Children and Start Living Again." With some effort, the whole book can be generalized from the specific case of infertility to childlessness for other reasons.

The authors make the case that a person who is not fertile can actively choose either infertility or childfree living. Their unusual definitions of childfree versus infertile and childless actually made sense after I read their detailed explanations. They write, "It is choice that makes the difference between voluntary and involuntary childlessness. Childfree means turning involuntary childlessness into voluntary childlessness. And we would rather live our lives in the achievement of a major life goal than in the constant reminder of the frustration of one." Childfree does not mean disliking children.

This book does a good job of explaining exactly what childfree living is and how it has worked for them. Luckily, they are not pushing this option on readers.
Key points are:
1. Happiness after infertility is much more likely if one makes active choices about how to spend the rest of one's life than if one drifts.
2. Every loss such as infertility or childlessness also contains the potential for gain and personal growth.
3. Building effective communication skills between partners is important.
4. Decision-making processes and skills can be learned. Decisions addressed are how much infertility treatment to undergo, how to spend the rest of one's life if biological children are not possible and whether to live childfree.
Be sure to read the revised 1998 edition because it includes an Epilogue. Bibliography but no index included.

I highly recommend Linda Hunt Anton's 1992 "Never To Be A Mother: A Guide For All Women Who Didn't--Or Couldn't--Have Children." Written by an infertile, childless, social-worker-therapist, it is the best self-help book I've found on dealing with emotional aspects of childlessness. Readers benefit from her non-threatening writing style, professional training and years of experience in infertility and childlessness counseling.

A light at the end of the tunnel...
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! An amazing book to help you survive infertility. After 7 IVF's, several miscarriages and a medical conclusion that what felt impossible, was impossible, this book changed my life. After reading it, I felt as though there was a light at the end of the tunnel. I took control of my life and realized that I could have a rewarding, happy life...I just needed to make the active choice to BE HAPPY! If you feel "stuck", read this book...it will change your perspective on life!

Very helpful, calming and a quick read
I found this book extremely helpful after our 4 failed IVF attempts along with 2 miscarriages. It helped me get out of the hole that I had dug for my husband and myself and get on with life!

I felt immeasurably relieved after reading it.

Bones
Published in Paperback by Chronicle Books (October, 1996)
Author: Keith Carter
Average review score:

This is a great book and you should buy it
This is not just about dogs. This is a book about us and our own relationships with ourselves and each other. Sometimes, you need to look elsewhere to find yourself. These photos contain the awkward grace, honest beauty and higher angels of our nature. You look at a dog see a messenger from a secret, internal world. Keith has really hit the ball out of the park with this book. Go fetch (Oh ha, ha, ha!)! Just put the book in your shopping cart and don't look back. If you don't like it once it arrives, I'll buy you a coke for the pain.

Great coffee table book
This book has been on my coffee table for several years now. Every once in a while I pick it up and look through it again, and I am intrigued every time. This isn't your average cutesy dog book, but one in which each dog has a unique personality and perspective. The photos range in mood from sad to jubilant. Another thing that I appreciate is that the dogs aren't all purebreds, but are usually your average mutts. I love this book!

For Dog OR Photography Lovers!
Like the first two reviewers, I have a great enthusiasm for this book. The great thing about this book is the masterful blend of superb black and white photographs with a subject that millions appreciate: dogs!

Mr. Carter has done an excellent job of providing insight into the dogs he photographs. The images are almost portraits, not just snapshots of animals wandering the neighborhood.

If you can find a copy of this book, I suggest buying it - I doubt that you'll be disappointed!

Bugs in Space : Starring Captain Bug Rogers
Published in Hardcover by Little Simon (01 October, 1997)
Author: David Carter
Average review score:

Daughter loves this book.
This book is full of silly plays on words, like "Capt. Bug Rogers" and "The Bug in the Moon." Although my 4-year-old daughter doesn't get the references, she still asks me to read it again and again. Every page has a pop-up, a movable piece, or flap to open. She broke two of them, which I was able to glue back together, good as new. Personally I thought it was kind of hokey, but I rated it 5 stars because it certainly seems to reach its audience.

Excellent Children's Book!
This is the first "Bug Book" by David Carter I have bought. It has wonderful illustrations and pop-ups. I thought it was a little young for my four-month old son when I bought it. However, I thought it was too cute to pass up. As it turns out the colors are so vivid and eye-catching and the pop-ups so entertaining, that he actually laughs when I read it to him. I highly recommend it for children of any age. I plan on buying many more of the "Bug Books".

Bugs in Space
Our five year-old son received this book as a gift and it was a delightful surprise! We laughed out loud through the whole book. It was very fun to read. Lots of interactive fun! This was our first book by David Carter but I would buy another. Very young children would like it too but I would be afraid of it holding up without getting ripped - not that it is too flimsy but that young hands would want to grab it.

Chapter 10 contains a complete listing of all Signatures (at print time) that the CSIDS system can detect making this an excellent Reference book.

Keep this on your shelf and close by!!!

Kudo's to Earl Carter for the excellent job in Editing!!!

Excellent Reference for CiscoSecure IDS
Its a direct portal from Cisco's CSIDS class. If you have the class materials, then you do not need this book. Otherwise, its the only book out there by Cisco, on CiscoSecure IDS (formerly Netranger) product line.
